Palmyra, Syria

Palmyra was a desert oasis and played an important role in the caravan trade between the Mediterranean Sea and the Persian Gulf. It flourished during the 2nd-3rd centuries CE and was a wealthy urban center until it was destroyed by the Romans in 273 CE.
