Sankore Mosque

Sankore mosque has served as a significant focus for Timbuktu’s religious and intellectual life since the early fifteenth century. The mosque is composed of a large interior patio surrounded by arcaded galleries and an adjoining prayer hall with a single prayer niche (mihrab). The prayer hall is composed of three colonnades that divide the hall in four aisles for worshippers. The mosque’s single, pyramidal minaret is visible in the image to the left.
