The Great Mosque at Kotaka

The Great Mosque of Kotaka dominates the community’s skyline, as seen in the view from the river in the lower left. The mosque is reminiscent of the verticality and monumentality of the Great Mosque at Djenné, but original in the shape and arrangement of its towers and pilasters. The spaces between pilasters contain large window openings filled with wooden screens that have been decorated with geometric patterns. The mosque’s principal facade also features a large entryway topped with a horseshoe arch. A courtyard surrounds the mosque, separating it somewhat from other structures in the town.
