Niger River and Inner Niger Delta Region

The floodplains created by the Niger River and its tributaries in Central Mali have made it a significant population center in the country, and home to its third-largest city, Mopti. The Inner Delta region is also home to some of Mali's largest mud-brick mosques, including the famous Great Mosque at Djenné, another port city on the Niger, but also significant structures at Mopti and Kotaka. Smaller communities near the Niger, such as Sebi and Kara, also maintain mosque-building traditions, albeit on a smaller scale.
