Bandiagara Escarpment and Seno-Gondo Plains

The mosques in the Dogon communities of Domolosgo and Sengaben resemble those in the Djenné region in many respects. Box-like projections from the qibla wall surround the interior mihrab and are topped with a conical minaret, studded with toron. Wall sections are divided by pilasters topped with tooth-like pinnacles. In addition to regularly-spaced toron, the wall surfaces of both mosques are ornamented with rows of rectangular or triangular niches. The mud-brick granary structures with conical roofs in the background of each image identify the mosque builders as the Dogon people of the Seno-Gondo plains. The wooden ladder left leaning against the Sengaben mosque is the same as those used in the cliff structures of the sandstone cliffs of the nearby Bandiagara Escarpment.
